Play virtually any media file in open-source cross-platform multimedia player.

UMPlayer
UMPlayer stands for Universal Media Player, and this open-source freeware aims to be a universal media solution. With hundreds of codecs, it plays most video and music files as well as audio CDs, DVDs, SHOUTcast, and live radio and TV from tuner cards. Of course, it plays YouTube videos; in fact, it has a built-in YouTube player/recorder feature and search field on its toolbar. With a skinnable interface, hot keys, subtitle sync, and the regular free updates of an active open-source project, UMPlayer poses a serious challenge to VLC, MPC and other popular free media players.

As an efficiently configured desktop media player, UMPlayer's user interface can only be so different from other free players without looking freakish, but its attractive layout has enough simple differences to make it stand out without screaming, such as its subtle but effective highlighting of the title and counter section or its user-selectable toolbar that includes a screenshot tool, DVD player, quick access to files and Web links, and access to the program's Preferences, as well as the aforementioned YouTube search box. You can quickly toggle this toolbar off for a more traditional look, but we suspect many users will find it handy for daily use. The Help menu includes FAQs, Tips and Tricks, and Web links; the Skins menu offered six styles with a link to get more.

The proof is in the playing with digital media, and UMPlayer didn't disappoint, even in direct side-by-side comparisons to VLC, our default media player. We didn't run through the entire list of supported formats for each player; suffice to say that each does most of what the other does, and just as well. Few users will notice any difference for most file types. It comes down to a matter of choice. If VLC has a fault, it's that it just does too much. If you like the idea of a free, open-source media player that can handle just about anything but find VLC a bit overwhelming, give UMPlayer a spin.

Share and stay connected with your friends with the Facebook for Android app.

The official Facebook for Android app is undoubtedly the best way to interact with Facebook on your Android smartphone. An overhauled interface (that closely resembles the iPhone app, we might add) presents seven icons for your news feed, profile, friends, photos, message in-box, events (like birthdays), and pending friend requests. Below the icon dashboard is a photo reel that lets you swipe through thumbnails of friends' recently uploaded photos, although there's no context surrounding the image until you click through to your buddy's profile page. Even then, you won't be able to enlarge the image until you click again.

The start screen is also home to a notifications bar that slides up to share the latest news. In addition, there are shortcut buttons for updating your status and searching your friend list or the global Facebook roster.

Though the update is a vast improvement to the feature-thin predecessor, we're still looking forward to seeing Facebook further refine the app.

8.   Windows Movie Maker

Windows Movie Maker 2 is so easy a child could use it--an incredibly patient child born to filmmaker parents who didn't mind restarting this application every few minutes. From the get-go, you get the feeling that this isn't going to be an easy program to like; Microsoft's installer doesn't play nice. It gives the user no input on program location or other options. The plain interface promises simplicity with drag-and-drop storyboard options, though during testing, it was more like drag and freeze. The program typically froze while importing MPG video files. If importing worked, Movie Maker 2 would quit responding when clips were placed on the storyboard. On the rare occasion that our testers made it to the storyboard, the program would freeze when adding one of the numerous effects. There were so many hurdles to creating a short video that no editing seemed preferable to using this software. What's more, uninstalling the program was even more tedious than installing it. It should be no surprise, then, that we can't recommend this freeware for any user.

How to copy files to Google Drive faster in Windows7

The Google Drive desktop application in Windows 7 creates a nice little shortcut in your Favorites folder for easy access to your files. Using Windows Explorer, you can copy files to it like any other file or folder in Windows. But there's a faster way to copy files to your Google Drive account. Using the Send to context menu option, you can right-click on any file or folder and send it straight to your Google Drive folder.

Here's how to set it up:

Step 1: Make sure you have the Google Drive desktop application installed on your Windows 7 PC.
Step 2: Open the Run dialog box by hitting Win+R, then type:%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo and hit OK.

Step 3: When the SendTo folder opens, right-click on the Google Drive icon in the left pane, under "Favorites," and drag it over to an open area of the SendTo folder in the right pane. Don't drag it onto one of the shortcuts already in the folder, or else you'll get the wrong menu for Step 4.

Step 4: After you let go of the icon in the SendTo folder, select "Create shortcuts here."

Step 5: To copy a file or folder using the SendTo context menu, right-click on any file or folder in Windows Explorer, then go to "Send to" and choose Google Drive.

That's it. Now you can send files to your Google Drive account in Windows by right-clicking on any file or folder. To select multiple files, just press the Ctrl key as you highlight the files you want to send.
